The Battle of Gettysburg
THE SOUTH had recently won a victory at Chancellorsville, and Robert E. Lee decided to attack the North again, this time moving up into Pennsylvania. Lee decided that winning a battle in the North would give the Confederacy a lead in the war. He led his troops into Gettysburg, not expecting the Union army, but only the Pennsylvania Militia.
Both Armies fought for 3 days. The union had 23,055 casualties, with 3,155 killed, 14,531 wounded, and 5,369 captured or missing. The confederate casualties were not recorded.
