Battle of Vicksburg: May 18th - July 4th, 1863
Union troops lead by Ulysses Grant
surrounded and isolated the city of Vicksburg, making it impossible for
Confederate troops come and reinforce the troops in Vicksburg being
surrounded.
· May 19 through May 22 - General Grant launched a group of
assaults on the confederate troops inside of Vicksburg, causing the Union troops
to suffer serious losses. After these serious losses General Grant ordered his men to start digging a serious of trenches, also called“Approaches” to the confederate spaces.
· July 4th – Confederate troops surrendered to General
Grant ending he siege and placing control of Mississippi fully in the Unions
hand. Cutting the Confederacies numbers in half.
After the great success that General Grant
had, had, his reputation was boosted, and he was moved up in the eyes of the Lincoln Administrations, leading to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies.
